How long should a LinkedIn headline be?

LinkedIn allows up to 220 characters. Use as much of that space as you can without padding it with filler. Most high-performing headlines use between 100 and 200 characters. The key is to be specific and benefit-oriented, not to hit a particular character count.

Should I include my job title in my LinkedIn headline?

It depends on your goal. If your job title is recognisable and carries weight in your industry (e.g., "VP of Product at Stripe"), include it. If your title is generic or internal jargon (e.g., "Client Success Specialist II"), you are better off replacing it with a description of what you actually do and who you do it for.

Can I use emojis in my LinkedIn headline?

Yes, but be strategic. A single relevant emoji can add visual distinction. However, a headline filled with emojis looks unprofessional in most industries. If you are in a creative or consumer-facing field, an emoji or two is fine. In finance, law, or healthcare, avoid them.

How often should I change my LinkedIn headline?

Review it quarterly at minimum. Change it when your role, audience, offer, or positioning shifts. You can also test variations to see which drives more profile views and search appearances. Do not change it daily — give each version at least two weeks to generate meaningful data.

Does my LinkedIn headline affect search rankings?

Yes. LinkedIn's search algorithm gives significant weight to headline text. Keywords in your headline are one of the primary factors in determining whether your profile appears in search results for a given query. This is why including relevant industry terms and role descriptors matters.
